Tell Us About Your Family Tradiitons

Marilyn shared some Boyer family traditions with you this month in Moment with Marilyn, but we'd love for you to share your family's favorite Thanksgiving traditions, too! Leave a comment on this post, telling us and other parents about it! Maybe we'll all find a new idea to start this year!

Before we ate our Thanksgiving dinner, my dad always read a psalm and we would each go around the table and praise God for what He had done in our lives over the past year. It was always my favorite to 'recount the works of God!

Starting on November 1, I put a huge tree trunk made of butcher paper on the wall. Everyday until Thanksgiving each member gets a colored leaf cut from construction paper and writes something they are thankful for on the leaf. We then hang the leaf on the tree. By Thanksgiving, the tree is full of colored leaves and full of heart warming, humorous, memorable or just plain silly words of thanks.

We have LOADS of Thanksgiving traditions.

1) The week before the kids and I make a HUGE batch of homemade apple butter for Thanksgiving Day dinner.

2) Also, the week before, my sister-in-law comes over and bakes TONS of sweet stuff for Thanksgiving with the kids. Can you tell the kids love to cook?

3) Every year since my brother and I were little, we wrote things we were thankful for on slips of paper and my Mom put them in a glass jar. Every year we read these after the meal. Some are just so funny to read!

4) We use Family Life Today's ThanksLiving Treasure Box with our children. This is a great way to learn about God's provision for the Pilgrims and to teach the kids to be thankful for our freedoms and other things that we have been given by God! This is no longer sold by FLT, but it might be found on Ebay. It's a GREAT tradition for young and old! I really hope that FLT brings it back!

5) The kids and I "inject" the turkey with seasonings and prepare it completely. Of course, as a 2nd generation homeschooler, I have to teach them all about the liver, heart and neck! :) They look forward to this every year!

6) Daddy reads the last ThanksLiving devotional at the dinner table and prays, as always, with the family before we leave the table.

7) The day after Thanksgiving, we go to a local tree farm and cut down a Christmas tree and celebrate Jesus' birth!
