It's Not Too Late for America!

Election day is very close and it looks like it will bring good news for a change. I hope you’re all planning to vote, work the polls and encourage others to take their responsibility as well. Our eldest son, Rick, is running for Clerk of Court in our county as most of you know. We think our man will win, but it’s been a hard-fought campaign. He has three opponents and the strongest one has definitely given us a run for our money. Win or lose, we’re not going anywhere. The Boyers and other conservative Christians of Campbell County, Virginia are in it for the long haul. As part of that blessed group known as We the People, we have a responsibility to make our voices heard. We have, and we will.
This brings me to the main point of this posting. For many years I’ve heard people say that the church must prepare for persecution because the freedoms that we now have are slowly and inevitably being eroded. Someday soon, the church in America will suffer the same fate as the church in ancient Rome. We will be imprisoned, tortured, murdered, driven underground, fed to the lions in the coliseum for the amusement of the emporer and the pagan crowds. It’s only a matter of time, they say.
I say, go soak your head.
This is America, people! Land of the free, home of the brave. We are Americans! Endowed, as the Declaration says, with certain unalienable rights. We have inherited the most wonderful nation in the history of the world and I say it is a sin to squat on our haunches and bewail our shrinking freedoms instead of fighting with every weapon, spiritual and natural, at our disposal to restore her to her early promise.
We’re on our way down, you say? I don’t believe it. But if you’re right, it’s because of millions of people who name the name of Christ, yet would rather spend their time watching drivel on television than taking responsibility for the culture around them. Are you aware that three out of every four professing evangelical Christians don’t even bother to vote? And voting is about the easiest of our responsibilities to fulfill.
But politics is a dirty game, you say. Christians shouldn’t be involved.
Baloney! Politics is dirty because we have left it in dirty hands. It is those of us who have been cleansed by the blood of Christ who have the greatest responsibility to be involved in choosing our leaders.
But we’re supposed to be praying and winning souls, you say. Not getting into political sqabbles. The business of the church is the Gospel.
There you have a point. And I say, if the church was serious about spreading the Gospel, there would be a lot more praying and soul winning going on. But there’s not. The average believer has done no more about getting Gospel tracts into his neighbors’ homes than he has about giving them political flyers. The fact is we’re loafing!
"There’s nothing we can do", you say. "These are the 'last days' of II Timothy 3:1 and things are just going to get worse until Jesus comes. The only thing we can do is circle the wagons and play defense, hoping the enemy won’t hurt us too badly before Jesus gets here to rescue us."
Baloney again. Check out Hebrews 1:2 where the writer talks about how God has communicated with us through His son in “these last days.” This writer, as every generation since the resurrection, thought that his generation would see the return of Christ. The Greek for “last days” here is exactly the same as in II Timothy 3:1. So get off it. Yes, Jesus could come today. I hope He does. But He could also come a thousand years from now. When He comes, will he find us "occupying til He comes (LK. 19:13) or sitting around whining about how tough life is? Look up the Greek for "occupy" in that verse and you'll find it means "to busy oneself." In other words, the master gave the 3 servants funds to invest for Him and told them to get busy making Him a profit. We're to be doing His business when He returns. Working.
I won't weary you with my replies to the many other whining excuses I've heard for non-involvement. Just let me leave you with this little thought: Jesus promised that God would provide our food just as surely as He does for the birds of the air. But the Bible also tells us that he who will not work should not eat. God has provided a million blessings for us as Americans. But he still expects us to work to keep them coming. Sitting around, moaning about the blessings we're sure to lose, is the best way to be sure we lose them.
I hope a lot of you will reply to this post, agree or disagree. Let's start a dialogue on this blog and keep it going. The issues of our day are of life and death importance to our children and grandchildren. Let's talk about it, and let's do something about it. Now.

~Rick

I agree completely! Well spoken! We are a military family and live just outside Washington DC. My husband is currently preparing to deploy in defense of this great nation. If we didn't think there was hope for this country our family wouldn't be serving. Of course, our greatest hope is in Christ!

This is a very 'dark' place to live. Definitely very different values than in the Midwest where we grew up! But in the last couple of years we've begun to see other Christians around us start to 'wake up'. I am so excited to see what God can do in this nation! Let's continue to press on, get on our knees for this nation, and raise a Godly generation. I believe God will richly bless our efforts.

By the way, we are praying for Rick on Tuesday!

This is so rich, thank you for writing this Rick. Our family has really been struggling with depression and hopelessness because of the 'doom and gloom gospel' (which really is no gospel at all). Your thoughts on what we can do beyond voting (we're Canadians) would be appreciated.

After reading your blog to my wife and children we talked about how William Wilberforce worked for Jesus in politics and changed the world and about how the children of Israel often were being outnumbered, out gunned, and backsliding only to be saved by a few good men who put their trust in God and behaved with the highest of courage, wisdom and as unto the Lord.

Like the Israelis cried every inch of the way to the promised land, so is the 'doom and gloom gospel band', and it's not for anyone's good. Life is, and always will be the best thing we've ever been given, and it's worth working to preserve. God bless you.

My husband and I agree with you... however, we believe that Jesus will be coming at the end of our lives... we do not know that to be sure, but that is what we believe based on things that we have been privy to, and scripture study...
We are fighting hard over here too... We are supporting good politicians and spreading the news about Jesus, Heavenly Father and Eternal Salvation every chance we get... We love your stance and stand strong with you!
We are campaigning for the Family Court System to stop allowing people to abuse their ex's through the courts and through their children as well! We are with you all the way!
Here are our sites that we just started... please feel free to sign our petitions and pass them on to everyone that you can as well! The only way that we will be able to make a difference is if we stand strong, together, undivided, and share the love that we have been given by God to all those around us!
God Bless!

Much Love and Best Wishes,

I totally agree. As a mother of 5 young boys ages 3 to 12 I'd like to get them involved NOW but it is not easy to find something we can do as a family. I'd love to hear some ideas from you on how to instill these principals in my boys so that they will stand for their generation... and the ones after them.

I was laughing aloud in startled agreement that a Christian would boldly and concisely speak the truth to blast these weak arguments against involvement! Thank you!

I have watched the campaigns this cycle and seen people who love God back away from those issues, in favor of talking economics, jobs, etc. What do you think? Should we boldly say that we are Christian and stand for those values without shame--knowing that we will likely be smeared and defeated before we can enact any change? Or should we focus on the issues most important to voters, downplaying the more controversial subjects so that we can at least be elected to fix those legitimate economic and other problems that are the focus of the day?

This is a puzzling question to me, since we clearly need to get involved, yet our corrupted culture has made it appalling and "evil" to even suggest that homosexuality is a "lifestyle choice." These are the questions that have swirled in my head as I've considered real involvement. I might even like to run someday, but for now, I have four little ones, which makes such aims very unlikely.

It would be especially great for you to outline realistic ways for stay-at-home homeschooling moms to get involved. It is really hard when we cannot do anything (without kids) without securing a babysitter, and that it constrained by THEIR schedules and our funds.

That is a lot to say that you are hitting a nerve in a good way. Your insight on how to bring that to action, without compromising the God-given jobs in the home that we have, would be most helpful. God Bless!

Thank you Brother. I was home schooled, currently homeschooling my 4 year-old-year, and I've been volunteering on Jackie Walorski's (a candidate for Congress running against a so-called 'blue-dog')campaign. Yesterday a group of home-schoolers came in and made phone calls, most of them couldn't vote, but they were doing what they could do. I was so proud, this is one of the ways we take back America, yes we need to pray, but we also need to get off the couch and do something!

It's true when they say ,"God is not Republican." My husband's uncle has been State Representative (Dem), but had to run against a Republican who was blatantly slandering his character and lying about his political stances. He showed us the TV ads she was running, and I certainly wouldn't have wanted to vote for him had I seen those and not been personally aquainted with the man! However God, being in control as He is, did allow the more suitable candidate to win. Be prayerful and educated when you vote. It's so easy to just vote straight Republican....BIG mistake in my *humble* opinion. BTW, has anyone heard of the North American Union? Google it, and remind yourselves that the people you vote for on Tue could be making even more crucial decisions years down the road. We're talking the end of national sovereignty.

Rick,

Thank you for the bold words! We completely agree that we must occupy until He comes. If we set our hearts on Him returning next month or next year or even in 10 years I think we will most likely be passive and pull away from doing battle in His name. If we set our hearts on Him returning a thousand years from now then we will be more likely to get involved and work.

If Jesus does return sooner, wonderful, but let's plan for a longer haul and be active until He comes.

Up here in PA we're trying to start locally and focus on reclaiming our local municipalities first. If we retake our counties and states then later we can retake the national level more easily.

In Christ,
David

Dear Rick,

Thank you for your post. I needed to hear this today. Our large family of eight children has recently come under the scrutiny of Child Protection Services because we allowed ourselves to be vulnerable in order to adopt a little 7 year old from the state. It's amazing how very quickly we went from being the "perfect" family to possible criminals. It has been horrifying and very sad to lose this little boy as well as to be threatened the state watching our other children.

Anyway, I have gone through a period of real discouragement and soul searching because of a very real threat to our family by the state. We have had to hire an attorney (shopping for an attorney is an interesting experience!)and have had to do our own research about what exactly our rights are as citizens...all in all an education!

God is good to continue to lead and guide us. We continue to pray about how to "get involved" in changing our really horrible social services system which gives social workers way to much power to abitrarily decide what is in "the best interests" of the life of a child.

In the end, we know that the founding fathers set up a series of checks and balances which works well if righteous men are elected to positions of authority. I will continue to raise our little men to be righteous and our daughters to vote righteously and we will continue to pray for our country!

Thanks again. My husband and I have often remembered your story about going on "man hunts" with your dogs and gotten a good laugh out of that! It was in one of your early books.

Blessings to you and yours

Mrs. Doug Farris (Jill)

Hi Jill,

Thank you for writing! Are your troubles with social services resolved now? What state do you live in?

So sorry you've had trouble, I know it's like having a huge black cloud over your head. Been there, done that, didn't like it.

I'm encouraged that you're training your children to make a difference. You need to educate yourself and your family as to what you can do to change things. Our period of persecution was a big part of the motivation my sons have now for political involvement. I'm sure you'll find your problems will motivate your kids to action too.

Soon we will be publicizing our Take Back the Land conference. I hope you will attend one next year. If you're interested, you might even be able to be involved in helping us present one in your area. Email if you think you might like to look into that. This conference will give you some specific things you can do to make a difference and to train your kids to think that way as well.

You'll no doubt be excited to know that I have recently started volunteering with a nearby sheriff's office helping their K-9 guys train their dogs. Maybe I'll have some fresh stories for you someday!

Grace& peace,

Rick
